IPTG and X-Gal
IPTG (Isopropyl-β-D-thiogalactopyranoside)
The most commonly used synthetic inductor of the Lac-operon is IPTG since it is both active at very low concentrations and not subject to enzymatic degradation.
X-Gal (5-Bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-β-D-galactopyranoside)
X-Gal is a substrate of the β-galactosidase. β-Galactosidase cleaves the substrate and releases indoxyl which will be oxidized to the insoluble indigo.
